Why (some of) you should be very afraid.
Slop is the soul of soulless capitalism. It is found in just about every creative endeavor in the modern day. It’s the by-the-book horse manure that abides by all the rules. In particular fields, it goes by certain names - such as the field of music composition, where it is called “pop music” or “muzak”.
This slop is mass-produced muck for the masses, for corporate or capitalist gain. Because its mass produced, it has to follow a guideline easy digestion - all part of the psychological game played by the higher ups pushed out to the droves.
Problem is, these things follow a guideline, and they've become easily replicable. Now? AI has come along to do the job.
You Get What You Give
Ladywizards and gentlemanwizards, the future is here. AI is within our grasp, and of course, as the tales have foretold, it’s taking our… "jobs".
Now, if your "job" involves abusing Google's search engine to push your crappy "top 5" blogs, opinion pieces, and long-winded memoirs just to share a simple recipe... an AI taking your "job" actually doesn't sound so bad.
If you want my opinion (no one does but I'll say it anyway) I have found that the only ones worried about these AI tools "replacing their jobs" are the ones flooding the internet with their unimaginative bullhonkery. The irony that their formulaic waste became the primordial soup that would later form the thing that would work against them… it’s quite poetic.
Being a blog writer myself (or at least, temporarily identifying as one every 4 months or so), I welcome our AI overlords. I even used an AI for this very blog, to come up with alternate ways to describe the uninspired brain rot being duplicated en masse.
I saw a post on a music production subreddit (Allah forgive me) asking how concerned one should be about AI replacing the jobs of “musicians”. While I do believe we are still a ways off (but not too far) before these bots sit down at a piano and start writing a bit more than generic I-V-vi-IV progressions, my bigger question is… who’s really going to suffer⸮
If you're a slop producer that makes the most generic "for the clubs/movies" shit imaginable - yeah, you're in big trouble, and rightfully so. AI is only trained on mass produced data, so if something like that poses a threat to you… were you ever really a musician⸮
Yes, I know, pompous gatekeeping, but it’s the truth: AI is kicking the peasants off their high horses. Sounds like the balance of nature to me.
