Payday 2 - The Cheater Dilemma

Updated: Dec 27, 2023

Time spent is time lost... is time spent?

There’s a discrepancy in the purity of longevity legitimacy that Payday 2 players are not paying attention to and, therefore, revealing themselves to be hypocrites.

Let me elaborate: every player has a legacy – the beginning and the chronicles which summarize their current eminence. This history, as far as we’re concerned, is an unknown.

Yes, maybe we can see small glimpses of their work through achievements, or stats. Maybe by some miracle they’ve documented their legacy through screenshots and video. But let’s be honest, who has time to review this?

In addition, with every game-altering update, every rigged server that gives out millions of undeserved cash and XP, every cheap restart to get better RNG, every meta-physical approach that nudges you away from the original experience happening behind the scenes… what is the true value of that legacy? Is it really anything to brag about? Do you really think you’re in a position to condemn anyone for cheating their history?

Let me stress this piece a bit more, since it likely went over your head – with every cheap restart to get better RNG, IS your legacy worth bragging about?

I point this one out in particular because every player has done it. Every infamy, YouTuber, notable figure, you name it. Even myself, I’m not ashamed to admit.

We’ve all been there; you got the bad deal on Day 2 of Rats. You killed one too many guards too early on in stealth. You wanted the truck in a different position on Biker Heist so you didn’t have to deal with that bothersome turret. You preemptively restarted for an advantage before embarking on what the game had planned for you.

Everyone’s done it cheap. Everyone’s legacy is a sham. The hours you’ve spent grinding on Cook Off are (as crude as this sounds) for naught.

With that said, I don’t wish to reprimand you for it. Certainly not. Again, I’m guilty of it too.

What I DO reprimand you for is the staggering hypocrisy. If one does not wish to subject themselves to endless hours of meaningless grind for a level that little to none should even care about - when even the highest of (however, null & void) infamy players have proven themselves to be just as reckless thanks to a static ranking system - then they should not face criticism, as they would only be receiving it from an equally deceitful fiend. On the contrary, if they should face backlash, then so should every other player, YouTuber, or anyone else who pretends they are some high-ranking member.

One is easier than the other. Payday 2 community, cease your hypocrisy.

It’s quite obvious by now, Overkill has no intention on stopping cheaters. They know the skill economy is tainted with fraudulence. Sure, they’ve condemned things that give players an unfair advantage, but it’d only logically apply when a player does it in a game with others, without their consent. Just as there is always that one player that asks the important, age-old question: “Restart?”.
