The All-Seeing Lie

Updated: Apr 23, 2022

A pit of despair

True love comes from the heart, but what if there is no heart? This one is easy: it comes from the universe. It comes to us from the shadows, the moon, the stars, etc. It can come from the people and nature around us. It has dialogue with us. It speaks to us as we act. Love is a wonderful feeling to have, and not all love is romantic. It is the feeling of knowing, knowing being, and being known. Point is, you don't need to be in a relationship to be in love. You don't need a lit candle, a bird's song, or anything else to be in love. You need a television set.

You've got one. A big, ugly one, resting in your living room, just waiting to be introduced to the rest of your neighbors, the cat, and you. The set's got bugs crawling on it, and the picture could always be better. It's really not that great, you know? But the set will do.

It's the best thing you own, and even if you don't use it, it's pretty, and it sits in your living room, and when you go to bed at night, it's there, ready to entertain you. It's the single greatest invention you can imagine. You've had it for a really, really long time. I'd say since 1912, maybe even earlier.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's a television set.

Now. We're going to turn on the television set, and watch a television show, right? We're going to turn the set on. We're going to choose a channel, or an antenna, or go through the menus on the remote, or whatever.

The picture won't be great, I know.

But that's okay.

We'll all be very happy.

Okay, here we go. Turn on the television set.

Now here's what I want you to think about. The television set is awesome. The shows we see on television are awesome. And they have the power to entertain us all night. Even if you're watching a show that's lame, or a show you just don't like.
