Payday 3 is a Disaster

Updated: Oct 27

Online-only.

Post-launch microtransactions that won't be added until later.

Post-Launch DLC and season pass, part of specific editions of the game.

Five versions of the game for sale (Base, Silver, Gold, Day one, Collectors).

Ridiculous file size (and let's be honest, that's certainly going to inflate dramatically over time).

Absurd system requirements.

Lack of post-heist lobbies.

PS5 players getting the short end of the stick.

Loss of personality.

Players are forced to wait in server queues just to play by themselves.

Two whole delays on the first patch.

Still no crimenet. Still no server browser.

A whole list of other complaints.

The 1.01 update finally arrives. Not enough for many people, though.

PAYDAY 3 demands co-op play, despite constantly hindering it

This is what you can expect from the next installment of Payday.

There really is no hope for any modern game these days, is there? As usual, they are plagued by disease; out of touch corporate executives trying to squeeze as much money out of the consumer as possible.

And the consumer always falls for it.

But if you’ve read any of my other posts, this really shouldn’t come as a surprise. I wasn’t holding my breath. From the makers that brought you gloves and charms and other cheap knick-knacks to Payday 2's post-life without reason, nu-Overkill cooks Payday 3 on the same chemical fire.

On the bright side, at least we got a neat live-action short out of it.

November 2023 update

As Payday 3 slowly but surely recovers (not really) from its terrible launch, only a few updates have come along to fix some things. Not enough to bring the game out of a “mixed” rating on Steam just yet (as of writing this), but “better late than never”, as the Cloaker would say.

Despite its mixed rating on Steam, as well as its depressing ~1,000 player count (as of writing this), Overkill is wasting no time getting the in-game economy up and running.

You see, preview clips of an upcoming update have demonstrated… something that should’ve been implemented on launch: first person interaction animations.

But for the Zoomers, the real interest lies on something else: weapon inspection animations.

Yeah, weapon inspecting, the thing that is required in just about every FPS now, because every FPS also needs to get in on the weapon skin craze, and every FPS wants to let zoomers see their eyesore weaponry that they spent dozens to hundreds of dollars on.

Look, in other words, they are about to move on to cultivating a weapon skin economy. This early on, it’s kind of laughable, but it is expected.

I want to blame Overkill and Starbreeze, but to be honest, I’m not sure which side is more pathetic.

The game is still a disaster (as of writing), but the community (or what’s left of it) is quick to forgive and forget as they bend over and let Overkill shove their fancy little knick-knacks right up their rear.

It’s a poetic summary of the absolute state of gaming as a whole, really. A crappy game launch, the bare minimum (to have the game finally surpass its worthiness of being called a sequel) being added months later, and of course the remaining community falling head over heels as they start implementing the most inane DLC imaginable.

Feb/March 2024 update

As of writing this, two months passed since the last update. Around this time, Overkill called in a quote-unquote "strike team" of "veteran developers" that were supposed to fix the broken mess that is Payday 3.

Will it fix Payday 3's super low player count? Spoiler: no, it won't.

April 2024 Final(?) Update

Hello.

At this point I have given up on following Payday 3 entirely. I can't be bothered to look for updates anymore. They're just so few and far between, and the things we do get are a whole lotta nothin'.

If there's one thing me and the developers can agree on, its that we don't care about Payday 3.

It would take a major, major turnaround for it to amount to anything remotely close to what Payday was. With all that said, this post has been finalized.
